Italy 2016: Varenna Day 3

Rifugio Menaggio and the arrival of George and Sue

One of our hosts Giorgio suggested that we take the ferry to Menaggio and the bus to Breglia then walk up to the Rifugio Menaggio, click on the link "gallery". We took the ferry from Varrena and had a lovely morning ride. Upon arriving we to found no bus on Sunday and the tourist office was closed. We decided to walk and asked directions. Every one we asked about walking to Breglia just shook their heads. We decided to take a 20 minute cab ride. The ride was always up hill around continuos hairpin curves. We arrived at Breglia first to visit the Sanctuary and then start our walk to the RifugioMenaggio, which was still straight up with fabulous views. Upon arrival we felt we were on top of the world. It took one and an half hours. Before returning we sat down and had a delicious vegetable soup. No Wine or we would never had made it back. Half way down an Italian man stopped and asked us if we wanted a ride. An invitation we could not resist. It would have been safer to walk because he raced down the hill braking hard at very corner. We did arrive safely but shaken. We took the ferry back and now we are awaiting the arrival of George and Sue our good friends from England.
